I'm a baby-boomer (like Min Kao (not pronounced K-O but cow) born in 1949) but unlike Min I'm not a $billion air (not just yet anyway) so how can I (how can you, er, anyone) afford all the new Garmin GPS models that come out every year? Dividends! Buy Garmin stock and the dividends ($0.75/share) will pay for all the new things they make!

Oh this was a kick to read, someone actually wrote an web page about my video demo here. A review of a review! NOTICE: Garmin fixed the track-crash problem just a few days after I reported it! Go GARMIN! We spent 8 days in Waikiki last month giving me time to play with and learn more about my nuvi. BTW, the cab drivers love it! Especically since it can predict traffic and plot a faster route! Checkout this photo I took from our room (Marriott 1401) which is sized just right for the nuvi flash opening screen and looks totally awesome on the nuvi-660. You are welcome to use it if you wish - but not for commercial purposes without an agreement as I declare copyright rights:-) This one is sized just right for the nuvi-660, a higher resolution version is available. If viewed on a good LCD see what it does when you angle it side to side and up and dow --- pretty amazing I think for a simple low res photo. I've since checked and found the screen is 480 x 272. Making the .jpg that size will get the most out of the Nuvi's screen otherwise Nuvi scales your .jpg to fit and you lose control of the look and quality. Being on the front edge of the leading edge of the biggest technology wave (explosion) in 30 years is NOT EASY! And that's where Garmin is today (11/2006). The more they do the more room there is for little things to be missed or go wrong. I saw an online reseller saying the nuvi-660 is their best selling GPS! WARNING: Do not load tracks into your nuvi-660. ---- it causes it to lock-up and become useless. The fix is fast and easy but you have to erase all waypoints and clear user data. Not a big deal if you've not added any waypoints or have them backed-up to a computer already. What are "tracks"? .... Kinda like a string of waypoints or bread crumbs marking a trail. Most all of Garmins handheald GPS in the last 10 years have had "tracks", however they are not that useful for auto navagation so are not included in nuvi. No problem - well except tracks can be created, saved, and loaded into nuvi via Mapsource (Garmin's flagship software application for managing maps, waypoints, etc - including tracks). Tracks are very cool to have when flying your gas turbine amphibous ultralight aircraft around so you can see where you went, how fast, how high, what speed was lift-off from the river and in what distance, and what speed was that touchdown and how far to stop. Or when hiking exploring new trails, skiing, etc - again, Garmin has products for all these things and the nuvi is for car, so forget tracks larry. I told Garmin TRACKS crash nuvi. I hope they fix it ASAP and at least tell their support people how to get nuvi back working again - which is easy! (NOTICE: Garmin did fix it - just a few days after I wrote this web page, I'll leave all this here because the solution may be useful for other unknown future problems - if any.) How to erase all waypoints and clear user data (fixes your nuvi post tracks crash) SOLUTION: Press and hold upper left corner screen during power-up. Delete waypoints. Nuvi-660 is now working again! ---- don't load tracks anymore. ---- I used to write software (for 30 years) for giant corporations and we'd use to say - make it idiot proof and along comes a better idiot. NOT A PROBLEM if you don't know, have, or care about TRACKS... which is going to be 99.999% of the normal non-old-dog-geek-type-human customers which does not include me :-(( --- but - regardless - it's kinda fun to learn the new powers of these new toys - and the Maintenance Mode (pressing upper left screen during power-on) is an AWESOME cool tool for geeks (and Garmin support people). BACKUP your waypoints and user data: ... but how? This Old-Dog needs to learn yet more nuvi tricks. Ugh.Ah! ... connect via USB cable, see via "My Computer" icon the "Removable Disk" drive named "Garmin nuvi (n:)",click on it, then folder named "Garmin", then "gpx", notice file (with extention .gbx) named "current". Ah ha, that's where all your current waypoints are saved. You can copy it and/or replace it. OK, so it's easy to backup. UPLOADING waypoints from Mapsource? Note: be careful to uncheck the [x] Tracks in the "What to send" selection box! and then what about [x] Maps, and [x] Routes too? Eeek, this old-dog has a lot of learning yet to do and it's time for a beer!OK... just to be safe I unchecked all but [x] Waypoints and uploaded them. I notice a new file has been created in E:\Garmin\gps named "Temp.GPX" ... that must be it! YES, ... in mapsource I cleared everything (File, New) then dragged and dropped Temp.GPS into Mapsource and there they are - wow, how easy things are nowadays (ONCE YOU KNOW!). OK so how does it become "current.gpx"? ANSWER: ... unplug nuvi USB, bingo, all waypoints are now there - installed and active. Current.gps increased from 2k to 5k bytes (interesting that Temp.GPX was 22k and is now gone - must have been some processing of the data no doubt) yet I can still drag and drop current.gpx into Mapsource and see work with the waypoints. This IS cool stuff! Questions: I entered a phone number for a waypoint I named "home", how can I see/set/etc it via Mapsource (ver 6.11.3 11/06)? I'll set the "comment" field with Mapsource for the Home waypoint and see if it shows up in nuvi somehow...yikes, it looks like nuvi is merging the uploaded waypoints with it's current set: "comment" field is not found or maintained by nuvi. New waypoints are merged with current (kinda cool) and changed waypoints by the same name are added with a "1" appended like if xxxx existed the uploaded xxxx will become xxxx1.Oops, I accedently uploaded a track and guess what? Crash city again! But this time no problem! Just hold thumb in upper left hand corner and power up. Clear waypoints and I'm back in business! Take it from the top Garmin. This time I uploaded waypoints AND routes too. No problem. I think nuvi ignored the routes --- something it should do with tracks too - me thinks. But, wow, what a fantastic device! The screen, brightness, gigabytes of memory, touchscreen, audio, FM, Bluetooth, ... I'm in total awe! Wish I had more free time and a lot more brain cells! nuvi = AWESOME COOL!!!!! and will be for years to come - so .... BUY ONE TODAY! no need to wait. Start learning & enjoying it now! Geekness not required.
